Message / Question

Why are you so anti-Pauline Hanson? You do know that Pauline Hanson is on the right wing of politics, and if you were to choose between her on Greens, there's no doubt you'd go with her right? She's also christian and that's why her party is called One Nation - One Nation Under GOD

Response

I’m sorry if I appear to be anti Pauline Hanson, in fact I am neither for nor against her. I do think that some have intentionally misrepresented her views and accused her unfairly of racism. On the other hand, some of the things that she has said have not particularly impressed me. You are right, I would certainly place her before the Greens on any ballot paper that I was filling in, but I doubt that I would ever be likely to give her my first preference. You suggest that she is “also Christian”. I haven’t seen any evidence to support that notion, however I can accept that our definition of “Christian” may not be the same. As for the name of Pauline Hanson’s Party – I doubt that the name “One Nation” has anything to do with the “under God” tag that you give it. One Nation under God is an American tag that comes from their Constitution and is certainly not an “Australianism”. I think that you’ll find that Pauline’s “One Nation” title comes from her philosophy of all Australians being one – a single Aussie culture rather than multiculturalism, a Nation standing together regardless of the circumstances that we find ourselves in. They are legitimate ideals, whether realistic or not remains in the court of public opinion.
