Message / Question
Why do churches celebrate anzac day? Are they for war? Shouldn't religion be about peace? Doesn't that make many atheists more "christian" than christians?
Response
As a nation, we have every reason to be thankful for the freedoms that we have and the relative peace in which we live. Throughout history there have been those who would have liked to have taken some of those things from us and we owe a great debt of gratitude to those who defended our freedom and lifestyle. Commemorating ANZAC day is not “glorifying war”, rather it is acknowledging the simple fact of history that many people paid a great price to keep Australia a free and democratic nation. To them, we owe nothing less than a debt of gratitude and thus we remember them. Whether a church or a community group, it is appropriate to pause to say “thank you” – and that’s what we did and will continue to do on ANZAC Day!
