Hello dr dave, what happens to the gay marriage plebiscite if there's a hung parliament? It's the question all Christians want to know but mainstream media isn't covering
Message / Question
Dr Dave, great answers recently. Will you be participating in the plebiscite to support the fight against gay marriage? What is your analysis if there is a hung parliament, for the plebiscite?
Response
I’ve placed these two questions together as they deal with the same issue.
The question of what happens to the plebiscite may be the million dollar question. If Turnbull finally wins 76 or more seats and forms government in his own right, then he is committed to a plebiscite. If he falls short of the required 76 but is supported by enough of the independents to form a government, he may find an “excuse” not to hold the plebiscite (the “excuse” being that he was not re-elected in his own right, so is not bound by the promise to hold a plebiscite). Of course, if Labor wins government (more likely to be in a minority government), then there will be no plebiscite. As for the media coverage of this issue, it seems that the general media is pro marriage law reform so they will do little, if anything, to promote a plebiscite, preferring to simply have a vote in Parliament to settle the issue.
If we do eventually have a plebiscite, I will certainly do all that I can to promote Biblical marriage and will certainly be advocating a “NO” vote on the issue of changing the law in relation to marriage. Having said that, I do still believe that we must avoid simply being the negative “killjoys” in society – I will advocate FOR God’s standard rather than simply opposing the idea of same sex marriage.
